Makeup For Casting Calls and Go Sees

$

 By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

The rule for audition ready makeup is simple: Less is more. Always. While you may be tempted to reach for your favorite glittery eyeshadow or to slather on that bronzer you never leave home without – don’t do it!

Casting calls and go sees are about showing the client what you really look like. This means wearing little to no makeup. Stay away from pinks, blues, greens, purples and any other color that you might normally wear.

Instead, your look for an audition should scream “I pretty much woke up like this.” You are a (mostly) blank canvas ready for the makeup artist and stylist to paint their picture for the project. If you absolutely must wear some makeup to your audition, here are the approved beauty items that will make sure you look like a pro:

Concealer
If you’d like, you can smooth out your complexion by using dots of concealer where you need it.

Foundation
If concealer isn’t enough, you can use a very small amount of foundation. Remember, you don’t want it to be caked on. The people at the audition will want to see what your skin is like so only use a tiny bit to smooth out your skin’s natural complexion.

Mascara
A little bit of mascara is fine to use if you want to wake up your eyes. It would be best to not go too dramatic with your mascara though. If you have light hair, a light brown mascara will do the trick. If you have dark hair, feel free to use black mascara. Definitely no false lashes! Even with a bit of mascara, you should still look fresh faced and natural.

Neutral Lipstick Or Lipgloss
A lip moisturizer would probably be best, but if you want to enhance your look just a bit it’s ok to wear a very natural, skin toned lipstick or lip gloss to an audition.

Trusted Casting Websites

 By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

If you’re an aspiring actor, you’ve probably signed up for every casting website you can find. With technology, you never know which sites you can trust. During my management days, there were three standard websites I required all of my clients to be on: ActorsAccess, LA Casting & Casting Frontier. These sites allowed actors to link their profiles, statics & resume to their representation’s account to be submitted for casting opportunities. Check out more information below about each of the websites that I recommend & the ones I don’t. Happy submitting!

APPROVED SITES

Actors Access

Actors Access is owned by Breakdown Services. Check out my article about Breakdown Services here.

Casting Directors have the option to release Breakdowns to actors and receive submissions directly from them. Actors Access is where actors can view those Breakdowns and submit to them. Actors Access is also an important tool for maintaining an actors profile by uploading and maintaining headshots, updating their resume, adding new skills and attributes, managing performance videos (reels), and more. And it’s all online.

Free Account – What do I get?
Free registration on Actors Access allows you 2 photos, a resume, a size card, your 1st SlateShot (a video slate), and the ability to view Breakdowns 24/7. There are NO monthly maintenance fees to keep your profile active. Electronic submissions on Actors Access incur a $2 per submission transmission fee. If you subscribe to their companion Showfax service, you can make unlimited electronic submissions and download sides at no charge.

Paid Account – What do I get?
All additional profile elements are one-time fees:

  • $10/ per additional photo
  • $22/ per minute of video added
  • $11/ per minute of audio added
  • $5/ additional SlateShot
  • $68/ a year gains you unlimited access & downloads to sides as well as no fee to submit for jobs.

You can sign up for a free Actors Access account by clicking here.

Casting Frontier

Casting Frontier has secured its place in the entertainment industry as the number one innovator of digital casting tools. Previously, casting directors used paper-size cards, Polaroids, and couriers to ship audition tapes across the city or country. Actors needed to print stacks of expensive high-quality headshots and resumes to procure auditions. In 2006, Casting Frontier changed all of that with the launch of iSession – a digital platform where casting directors can upload audition tapes, headshots & actor stats to send to their client.

With Casting Frontier, you can submit to casting calls for commercials, TV shows, feature & independent films, print and digital content. Top casting directors use Casting Frontier looking for talent.

Free Account – What do I get?
Your free account includes 1 headshot, an online resume and limited direct casting submissions.

Paid Account – What do I get?
Premium – $75.99/year (or pay monthly for $12.99/month)

  • 5 headshots
  • Unlimited headshot changes
  • Unlimited direct casting submissions
  • Link to a website

Premium Plus – $95.99/year (or pay monthly for $17.99/month)

NOT RECOMMENDED WEBSITES

Explore Talent

This website gives access to a casting board that is “in your local market” however, after spending the registration fees to enroll, there are little to no opportunities. Talent Agents generally do not use this website for any casting opportunities for their clients. The website does say they have over 20,000 auditions & job openings, however, many of them may not be in your specific market and you’re paying per-audition through this website. They also do not disclose any upfront cost upon registration.

Nine9

While this website may sound great – real-time access to nationwide castings, comp cards, etc…it falls in the same category of ExploreTalent. Once you pay registration fees to enroll, you’ll find very little actual opportunities. Any time a casting website isn’t disclosing an upfront cost – beware!

Craigslist

I never recommend clients use Craigslist to find work. They do not verify the source of any projects posted online and a lot of them can be low budget and sketchy. It’s safe to say — stay away from any castings posted on Craigslist.

Model Mayhem

Model Mayhem hasn’t had the best reputation lately. There have been horror stories of models meeting up with photographers that are not in a studio, on-location or in a safe venue. I never recommend my clients to use any website where you can’t trust the sources that post auditions.

Social Media Do’s and Don’ts For Aspiring Teen Models and Actors

$
0
0

We are living in a digital world and in it more and more ways of socially connecting continue to pop up. Everyone* has a Facebook. And Instagram, Twitter and SnapChat lead the charge for how we communicate and document our lives.

Here are a few key tips to help keep your online social footprint heading in the right direction:

  • Don’t share anything you aren’t comfortable with the whole world knowing… forever. Consider that whenever you post anything online, anyone can copy and reshare it.
  • Safety comes first. Don’t count on privacy settings to keep everything you post a secret. Also, be careful geotagging your posts. You wouldn’t want the whole world to know where you are and what you are doing all of the time.
  • Don’t be a cyberbully and do reach out to someone if you feel like you are being bullied.
  • Do let your social media accounts be a reflection of who you are. These profiles are a great way to show off your uniqueness.
  • If you are working in the modeling or acting industry, do create a social media account just for your professional posts and a separate one for friends and family. This will help you keep your “work” accounts interesting and professional. Is your professional account the right place for all your selfies? Probably no.
  • Do post about the amazing projects and castings you go on. Behind the scenes pics, when you are allowed to post them of course, are always a fun thing to share.
  • Know the power of social influence and how it can impact your career. Especially in modeling, if you can build an online fan-base of followers, that audience counts as a big plus when you are looking to gain representation or book jobs.

*OK, maybe not everyone has a Facebook. But it sure does feel like it sometimes.

Interview with Barbizon of Green Bay Graduate Erin Schuessler

$

 By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Erin Schuessler graduated from Barbizon of Green Bay at just 9 years old. Today, Erin is starting her senior year of high school and she has already accomplished a lot! With bright future ahead of her, we caught up with Erin to learn more about where she is today and why she credits Barbizon for her start and continued success.

When did you first decide to pursue modeling and acting?
As a young girl, I had an outgoing personality, and love for trying new things. I was in my  first musical at age 8. After graduating from Barbizon at age 9, I knew this was something I really wanted to pursue. Pageants came about two years later, when one of my Barbizon teachers told me I should try National American Miss. That was the start of it all!

Erin Schuessler2What did you learn from your Barbizon experience?
Barbizon taught me so incredibly much more than how to act and pose in front of a camera.

“Barbizon gave me confidence, gave me insight into the industry, taught me how to properly act in a interview, how to sit, how to walk the runway, how to be myself.”

Barbizon gave me much needed confidence at such a young age, and it really helped me grow throughout the years and be open to new possibilities and how to professionally handle any scenario that came my way.

Before Barbizon I was a bubbly, young girl who didn’t have the confidence to pursue her dreams. Barbizon, the teachers, and the atmosphere itself helped transform me into a professional young woman. I gained lifelong friendships, insight, and professionalism from Barbizon that have helped me in everyday life ever since.

How did it feel to be crowned Miss Green Bay Area’s Outstanding Teen 2013?
Erin Schuessler3
I was incredibly surprised. I had prepared and practiced day after day. I had hoped for the best, but wasn’t expecting too much considering I was the youngest girl in my age division. Having the poise, professionalism, and new connections from Barbizon really helped open doors to opportunities like the Miss America Organization, and much more. Being Miss Green bay Area’s Outstanding Teen 2013 was an incredible experience.

Erin Schuessler4

What else have you be up to since graduating from Barbizon?
I’ve been focusing hard in school, and the ACT to be able to attend my dream college in California to be closer to LA, and pursue my acting career much more seriously than in small town Wisconsin.

Erin Schuessler5After Barbizon, I competed in the National American Miss Wisconsin Preteen pageant and placed Top 20 out of about 120 girls competing. I loved the experience and gained many friends from it, so I competed the following year and earned 1st runner up out of 120 girls.

Next, through the Miss America Scholarship Organization, I earned the title of Miss Green Bay Area’s Outstanding Teen 2013, along with college scholarships. The same year I was awarded the Spirit Award at Miss Wisconsin’s Outstanding Teen.

Erin Schuessler6During that time, I was a runway model for “The Pageant Event” in Milwaukee for 2 years in a row, and was a runway model for the Fox Cities Area “Prom Extravaganza” by Visuelle Productions. I’ve also been involved in the Distinguished Young Women of Wisconsin (class of 2017) where I placed 1st runner up out of a competitive group of 13 girls from around the state. I was also award Overall Fitness Award, Overall Interview Award, Overall Self Expression Award, and won the “Be Your Best Self” Essay Award.

Now I’m preparing for my senior year of high school, continuing to be an active volunteer in my community, an actress/singer/dancer in every one of my high school musicals/plays, and now starting to apply for colleges.

“Without the experiences, and important lessons learned from Barbizon, I would not be where I am today.”

Erin Schuessler7

What are your goals for the future?
In 5 years I definitely see myself graduating college with a few internships under my belt. I hope to be working as either a broadcast journalist for CNN or Good Morning America, or as a media intern/communications personnel for Universal Studios or Disney.

Any advice for pursuing a career in the modeling and entertainment industry?
Erin Schuessler8
It’s going to be hard, you’re going to hear “No” a lot, and people who will tell you you’re not right for this industry, or that you don’t have what it takes. But my best advice is to not believe any of them. Never stop fighting for what you believe in, and for what you want in life. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason.

A final note from Erin:
Follow me on Instagram and Facebook for more updates on my crazy, blessed life!

What In The World Is A ‘Coogan Account’

$

 \r\n

 By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

\r\nOne popular question we hear is “Do I really have to get a Coogan Account? I don’t even know what that is…”\r\n\r\nIf you are also wondering what a Coogan Account is, it’s a blocked trust account. This account is a court-administered trust fund designed to protect the earnings of child actors, athletes and other child performers until they become adults. A parent or guardian has no control over the account as the trustee. Since a minor cannot legally control their own money, there are laws in place to govern their earnings and create a fiduciary relationship between the parent and the child. This law requires 15% of all minors’ earnings to be set-aside in a Coogan Account. These blocked trust accounts are required by the State of California, New York, Louisiana and New Mexico. Any jobs shooting in those markets require talent to have a Coogan account.\r\n\r\nNow you may be wondering why do we have to have a law for this and how did it get its name? John Leslie “Jackie” Coogan was an American actor who began his career as a child actor when silent films were popular. His role on Charlie Chaplin’s classic The Kid made him one of the first known child stars in film history. Coogan made close to $4,000,000 throughout his career. His mother and stepfather recklessly spent his wealth. His mother felt that because his fortune was earned as a child under her care, she and her husband were entitled to spend the money however they saw fit. The Coogan Law went into effect to stop parents from taking advantage of their children’s well-earned finances.\r\n\r\nAs a minor in the entertainment business, it is required to have a Coogan account. Young talent may apply for a working Coogan account at the following locations:\r\n

    \r\n
  • SAG-AFTRA Federal Credit Union
  • \r\n

  • Actors Federal Credit Union
  • \r\n

  • Bank of the West

Resumes: Your Guide to Success

By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

An actor’s resume, along with a headshot, is an actor’s first introduction and a major selling point to casting directors. Your resume can showcase all of your on-set experience and training. You can also showcase your statistics, special skills and more. You may be saying to yourself “I don’t have any experience to list on my resume.” Don’t worry! Follow the tips below to create a professional resume for those of you just starting in the industry.

General Information On Resume Building For Actors

  • Make sure your resume can fit an 8×10 paper size (you will need to cut it down to this size).
  • You will neatly staple your headshot to the back of your resume in all 4 corners. DO NOT print your resume on the back of your headshot. Resumes are always changing.
  • Use plain white typing paper only – no patterns or textures.
  • You should never extend your resume to more than one sheet of paper.
  • Keep it clean! Don’t use crazy fonts, colors or images.
  • Keep each section bold.
  • Never lie on your resume. You WILL be caught. The entertainment industry is a very small circle and someone will find out. Do not damage your reputation because of a “little white lie.”
  • Standard Hollywood rule of thumb: do not put “extra roles” on your resume. This can harm your career.

Resume Header Information

  • You must include your full name (stage name is acceptable as well).
  • Your contact information or your representation’s contact information should be listed.
  • If you have union affiliation, please list here. (SAG-AFTRA, AEA, etc.) You can view more information about union here.
  • Be sure to include height, weight hair & eye color. ONLY LIST YOUR AGE IF YOU ARE UNDER 18.

Billing Information

In the industry, your “roles” or “credits” are considered billing. You’ll use this when listing your TV & Film experience. In each section of your resume, you’ll want to list your NEWEST & highest billed credits first. Remember – DO NOT LIST YOUR EXTRA WORK.

Example:

screen-shot-2016-12-28-at-1-09-22-pm

Credits are ranked from low to high: Under 5, Co-Star, Recurring Co-Star, Guest Star, Recurring Guest Star, Series Regular.

For theatre experience, you’ll list the name of the production, your character’s name, the theatre company & the location of your production. Generally, you do not have to list the director unless it’s a well-known director.

Example:

screen-shot-2016-12-28-at-1-10-20-pm

Training Information

Your next section to list is training. This will include any and all acting classes, workshops and additional training you’ve taken. You can list your Barbizon training, any competitions you’ve attended (and the workshops you’ve attended while at competition), college classes, etc.

Example:

screen-shot-2016-12-28-at-1-11-28-pm

Special Skills – You’ve All Got Them!

The final section to add is all about your special skills.

You can list anything from accents you do well to crazy stunts you can do. Check out more information on special skills here.

Barbizon Grad Taylor Mezzacappa Gives the Scoop on Her Feature in Girls’ Life Magazine

 By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Ever dreamed of being featured in a magazine? What would it be like and who would be the first person you would tell? We’ve teamed up with Girls’ Life Magazine to prove there are great girls everywhereand in the new “Great Girls” series, together we shine a light on remarkable young women with incredible stories. Barbizon graduate, Taylor Mezzacappa, and her sister, Alexa, also a Barbizon grad, are featured in the new series: These girls are goals: Taylor and Alexa on why having a sister is the *best*. We sat down with Taylor to catch up and see what makes her a Great Girl.

What’s it like to get featured in Girls’ Life Magazine?
I was overwhelmed with joy when I found out I was going to be featured in Girls’ Life. It was even more exciting that my younger sister, Alexa, was also going to be interviewed with me.

taylor-mezzacappa-and-alexa

How did you find out you were going to be featured in the new Girls’ Life “Great Girls” series?
Over the summer, we found out that we were both going to be featured. I remember reading the email and being shocked to see that both of our names were on it!

Who is the first person you told about getting featured in GL magazine?
The first people I told about the feature are my mom, dad and older sister, Jenna. They were in the room when we received the wonderful news!

Congratulations on nearing graduation from the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC. We heard you already have a job lined up as a handbag designer! What’s your favorite handbag?
Thank you so much! It’s hard to believe that four years of school came to an end so quickly. My favorite bag is the Logan satchel by Violet Ray. I love it because it’s very functional and has three compartments. It keeps me organized when I’m commuting to school and work. It comes in all different colors. I always carry it with me wherever I go!

Any advice for Barbizon students and graduates pursuing a career in the fashion industry?
If anyone is interested in pursuing a career in the fashion industry I think you should go for it! Follow your dreams and never give up. My Grandma always tells me, “If you love the work you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”. I think it’s important for everyone to be true to themselves and live the life they have always imagined. I also recommend if you’re really interested in the industry to take some fashion courses and learn more about your options. That’s what I did and it really helped me decide what major to declare before college started!

5 Things Not To Do If You Are New To Modeling

$

 By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

Everyone has to start somewhere and getting started modeling is no exception. While it’s ok to make mistakes as you learn what it means to be a professional model, it is always a good idea to do your research and learn as much as you can about the industry before you get started. These are 5 common mistakes new models often come across:

  • Building A Portfolio With All Your Fave Selfies
Save the selfies for Instagram. A model’s portfolio is not a photo album. It’s a professional book that shows different photo shoots of work done. Photo shoots you have done for clients are great to include, but if you’re new you may not have many (or any!) work to show. Test shoots are a great option to start building your model book.
  • Sloppy Social Media Habits
Remember, building your persona on social media is growing more and more important for working models. Make sure your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and any other public profile you have is a good representation of what you want people in the industry to see if (or should I say when) they look you up.
  • Unprofessional Email Addresses & Voicemail Greetings
It may seem obvious, but needs to be said. When you start booking go sees and castings, your email and phone will be how people reach you. Make sure you have a professional email address (example: LisaGModel@emailserver.com) and that your voicemail greeting is concise and professional.
  • Not Being Reachable
Casting opportunities can come from nowhere and leave you with little to no warning. Working models need to be accessible. Check your email regularly and return calls in a timely manner. These are good ways to make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities.
  • Giving Up
Following your dreams isn’t always easy. It takes a lot of hard work and determination to make it as a model. No matter what you do you can find a way to make your dreams a reality it as long as you don’t give up.
