How To Know What The Photographer Is Looking At

By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

As a model, you want to be able to do your part when it comes to getting the best shots. By being easy to work with, having the ability to take direction and staying mindful of the type of photo shoot you are working on, you will be able to set yourself apart as a professional. But how can you tell what the photographer is really looking for when working on a new shoot? Taking direction is key but you can pick up on a few cues about the style of the photo shoot just by paying attention to the details.

What are you selling? For commercial photoshoots consider what you are selling. Is it clothes? Shoes? Lipstick? Whatever the end product is, you can bet that the photographer will be focusing on it. Make sure that the poses and angles you use always accentuate the product.

Where are the lights? A key part of being a photographer is understanding the effects of different types of lights and playing with highlights and shadows. Whether it’s an outdoor, natural light photo shoot or an indoor overhead lit studio, it helps to know where your light source is and how your positions and poses will be affected by the light.

What is the perspective? Is the photographer shooting from a camera on a tripod at eye-level with you? Or maybe they’re taking an upshot from below? Or an aerial shot from above? Depending on where the camera is, you can get a feel for the perspective the photographer is looking to capture and know how to best work with the camera based on this.

These are just a few of the things the photographer is looking at and working with during a photo shoot. The more you know about the process, the better you can be prepared to give it your all and take direction from the photographer to get the best shots!

Do You Have To Act Your Age?

 By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

When you peek behind the curtain of Hollywood, you may find that things are not always as they appear. For actors, it is especially important to have a critical and unbiased view of your capabilities in believably portraying a role. Did you know that Sandra Bullock’s character in the movie Our Brand Is Crisis was originally written to be a played by a man? In reading the screenplay, she felt that despite this it was a role that she could shine in and bring to life and luckily the producers agreed.

When it comes to the age of a character, it’s also important to remember that every actor has an age range that they can believably play. If you are 12 years old, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should only audition for 12-year-old characters. Maybe your range is 10 to 15. Your range can be higher than your actual age or lower. Don’t limit yourself but be realistic for what you can believably portray.

Here are a few examples of actors who have played younger or older characters:

  • Actress Bianca Lawson was 14 years old when she was cast in Saved by the Bell: The New Class in 1993. More than 15 years later, Bianca was cast on the TV show Pretty Little Liars where she plays a 17-year-old at the age of 30.
  • Actress Shirley Henderson was 37 years old when she was cast in Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets landing the role of the teenage ghost Moaning Myrtle.
  • Amy Poehler is only 7 years older than Rachel McAdams but was cast in Mean Girls to play her mother.
  • Joy, which is set to release later this year, stars 24-year-old Jennifer Lawrence who plays a character who ages from 20 years old to 40 years old during the movie.
  • Brad Pitt was 45 years old when The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was released. With the help of prosthetics and makeup he plays a 70-year-old man who ages in reverse, a character that Pitt portrays until he nearly reaches the teen years.

What’s SAG-AFTRA

 By: David Woodell, Barbizon USA

“Are you ready to compete as a professional? SAG-AFTRA membership is a significant rite of passage for every working professional in the media and entertainment industry.” This is the opening line you see when it comes time to join SAG-AFTRA. Now, you may be asking yourself…what is SAG-AFTRA?!

  •  The short version: Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television & Radio Artists.
  • The long version: An American labor union representing more than 160,000 film and television principal and background performers, journalists, and radio personalities worldwide.

On March 30, 2012, SAG (Screen Actors Guild) and AFTRA (American Federation of Television & Radio Artists) merged into one union. This makes it a stronger, more organized union. Now, you may be asking yourself, why is it important to be SAG-AFTRA? SAG-AFTRA work is generally considered to be substantially more prestigious than non-union jobs. This is because of the reputation the union has throughout the entertainment industry. SAG-AFTRA members have priority over non-union actors when the decision-making comes for a project.

Joining SAG-AFTRA isn’t something that brand new, “green” actors can do. As a NON-UNION actor, you have to work for your eligibility to enter this union. There are a few ways you can qualify for your membership. When you are hired as a principal performer in a SAG-AFTRA signatory show/film, you are able to apply for your membership upon proof of employment. This must be a principal/speaking role and you need to have a signed contract & pay stubs to show this proof. Another way you can join would be if you are “Taft-Hartley” into the union. You can gain a SAG-AFTRA voucher each time you perform a background role on a SAG-AFTRA project. You will need to collect 3 of these vouchers and can take anywhere from 3 months and 5 years to gain those vouchers.

Once you qualify, you will be able to pay your membership dues & receive your SAG-AFTRA membership ID. Then once you become a SAG-AFTRA member, you can benefit from all that the union has to offer. Remember, it’s a great accomplishment to gain your SAG-AFTRA membership… you are one step closer to that Oscar you’ve always wanted!

What To Do When You Aren’t Modeling?

By: Kristina Anderson, Barbizon International

As a professional model, the work doesn’t stop when the photo shoot ends. There are many things that all aspiring professional models need to work on to every day to keep the ball rolling for new opportunities. A lot of work goes into becoming the kind of model that casting directors seek out.  Here are a few of the things you should be working on to build your career even when you aren’t modeling.

Work on your personal brand.

The way you portray yourself when communicating with industry professionals leaves an impression. Take a step back and ask yourself questions about the things you use and do every day that can be seen by someone in the industry. Is your email address professional? Do you stay on top of work related emails? Does your voicemail greeting sound professional? Do you return phone calls on time? It’s the small things things that add up to make a big impression on the way you are perceived as a professional.

Don’t forget to look over the printed items you bring with you to castings and go sees. Is your comp card a good reflection of your range as a model? Are your stats still accurate? When looking at your portfolio, is it a true portfolio that shows real work you have done? Does it show a range of the best work you have done? Having a professional portfolio is another great way to solidify your brand as a model.

Build your social presence.

Like it or not, social presence will continue to play a role in the modeling industry. As your career grows, brands will want to know how many Instagram followers you have. If a casting is between you and another model with thousands of followers, you may just lose out on a booking.

Additionally, models with a large following can often draw in a larger commission from a booking. This comes not only from their work on a campaign, but also the access to followers via social media.

Work on test shoots.

Test shoots are often unpaid opportunities to gain experience. Generally, a photographer will provide a photo shoot at no cost and the model will also work free of charge. Both benefit because they will each be able to use the images as examples. Test shoots are a great way to network with photographers and have professional photos taken.

Try to gain representation.

If you don’t already have representation, it is important to spend time researching agencies and managers in your market. Agents and managers can help you take your modeling career in the right direction. They can connect you with jobs and helping you navigate the industry. Not sure about the difference? Visit our website to learn about the difference between an agent and a manager. Also, be sure to research an agency / person before attending go sees or submitting. Know what you are walking into before you get there and be careful to only work with reputable companies.

Research the industry.

There are many blogs and publications that offer information and advice for models. Spend time on the internet researching the industry, best practices and learning new things. Staying on top of trends and expectations within the industry can help keep you one step ahead of the competition.

Stay healthy.

It may seem obvious but needs to be said: models have to stay healthy and should be in shape. This does not mean every model has to wear a size 0. All it means is that you should be the best possible version of yourself. There is a place in the industry for many different sizes and looks.

Eating healthy will help you feel better. It can improve your skin quality and give you the energy you need to work long days. Exercising means keeping fit and also feeling better. Getting enough sleep means waking up with more energy and fresh faced. Drinking lots of water will keep you hydrated and keep you feeling good. See a trend? It’s all about being the best version of yourself from the inside out.

Barbizon Behind-The-Music with Singer / Songwriter Carolina Davis

 By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Barbizon Illinois grad, Carolina Davis is a classically trained R&B / Soul / Pop Singer / Songwriter / Composer from Chicago, IL. As a person who kept to herself growing up, Carolina found music to be a way to express her feelings and to escape into her own world. Carolina explains, “I want my music to be relatable. I like to paint a picture in the listener’s mind.”

After completing her training at Barbizon Chicago, Carolina flew to Los Angeles to compete at the International Modeling and Talent Association and gained the attention of Marc Williams from Indasoul Records. Together, they recorded a demo tape for “Be Free,” a song Carolina wrote and composed.

In 2013, Barbizon produced a behind-the-scenes documentary about Carolina’s journey to creating her EP album, Strip My Mind.

Since then, Carolina has been gaining a lot of attention in the Chicago music scene. We decided to catch up with her to learn more about her rising music career.

Carolina Davis 2

What you have been doing since our last interview in 2013?
I’ve been booking a lot of shows and performing my music, booking a lot of modeling work, both photoshoots and runway shows. I also have my own Music Producer, Dillon Ficca. So far we’ve recorded about 10-12 new songs and I released two of the songs, one new song is currently airing on the radio. The song is a collaboration I did with Chicago Rapper Joe Rich. So, from there I have been booking a lot of shows all because of that song playing on the radio.

Who is your Producer?
His name is Dylan Sitka at Fifth Century Studios.

We saw you have a song with Gritz, what was it like working with him?
Gritz is signed to Twista’s label, GMG Entertainment. I had been friends with Gritz on Facebook, but I met him personally when I performed a show at The Loft, just west of Chicago. I performed before him, so we finally met each other face to face and from there we talked about how we wanted to work together.

I went over to his studio, I think it was like a couple days later and recorded a song with him. It was really cool working with him, because he’s been in the music industry a long time. Just seeing him and the way he works and how he puts melodies together was really a learning experience. I was trying to take it all in at once.

Do you have a new album coming out anytime soon?
As of right now, my producer and I are putting singles out and promoting them. Then, eventually the songs we’ve been producing will become an album. I want to experiment with different sounds and what I’m really feeling in order to get a grasp of the type of sound that I want. Basically, what we’ve been doing is experimenting and recording non-stop. So, I feel like I’m coming into my own voice which is what I want.

Other than that, I write everyday and spend every Wednesday recording in the studio. Hopefully we’ll be putting out a music video for the song “How I Feel.” “Beautiful Pain” is a song I recently released, kind of spur of the moment. It’s a free download available on Reverbnation.

What is Self Taping?

 By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

One very common theme I hear in my role as an Ambassador is “Well, I don’t live in a major market. How can I audition or even have a chance to audition for projects when my family won’t relocate?” While your chances of having large-scale auditions are higher in a major market, it isn’t unheard of for casting directors to accept self-taped auditions. With the way technology is advancing, the entertainment industry is adapting to an all digital audition process. Breakdown Services is the communications network and casting system that provides the most professional means to reach talent agents as well as actors when casting a project. They use a system that has been developed called Eco Cast. Eco Cast is a “virtual pre-read system” provided by Breakdown Services. With it, Casting Directors can send invitations to Talent Representatives or Actors directly to record an audition themselves, expanding the range of people Casting Directors can see for each role.

Just because you are self-taping doesn’t mean you have to go out to a studio or purchase expensive video equipment. You can simply tape from the comfort of your own home using your smartphone or tablet. I encourage you to use this article as a guide to help with self-taping.

Image may be NSFW.

Self Tape 2

Let’s set the scene.

Background & Surrounding Area
Make sure you are using a clean, solid-colored wall as your backdrop. You shouldn’t use a bed sheet as your backdrop…especially if it’s wrinkled. Also, make sure there aren’t any power outlets, light switches, paintings, or anything else distracting in the frame.

Lights…Camera…Action!
Now it’s time to set up your lighting and camera. Make sure that you are well-lit and that there aren’t any shadows showing up in the shot. Your camera framing should be from your bellybutton to the top of your head, unless otherwise instructed from the casting director. Make sure you are completely OFF BOOK (off book: TV/Film/Theatre talk for a completely memorized script) and that you project your voice. You want to be heard clearly in your audition tape.

The Slate and the Reader
Once “action” is called, you should slate your name & representation. Often times, actors feel the need to slate who they are reading for, the project, etc. however, this is unnecessary. As a general rule of thumb, you should only look into the camera during the slate & once you have begun the read, look just slightly off camera. I recommend looking to either the left or the right of the lens. You are going to want to read with someone that is off camera. Make sure they aren’t projecting as loudly as you are because you should be the focus. The reader will need to read all dialogue that isn’t your character.

For more information on self-taping, please check out the SAG Foundation’s YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D79zOFTiLfs  and here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9umJNHgRVwk. Good luck!

No Way Like Broadway: How To Get Started

  By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

lights
Have you ever been dazzled by the lights, glitz & glamour of Broadway? It’s thrilling to see the house lights dim as the orchestra begins to play the opening number of a show. It is easily a mesmerizing thought for many to think about the years of practice & hard work it takes for a performer to win over the crowd. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make a beautiful performance happen, and it all begins with the audition process.

The Broadway circle is a much different ring of directors, producers & casting directors than Hollywood. Telsey + Company, easily NYC’s largest casting company, is responsible for the majority of casting both on and off Broadway, as well as throughout the country with touring troupes. Most casting directors that work on Broadway focus on theatre and most casting directors that work in Hollywood focus on TV / Film production.

Most aspiring performers relocate to New York to make it big on Broadway after years of studying and receiving an undergraduate or graduate degree in acting or drama, but, that’s just the beginning of their career. “It takes a tremendous amount of training to star on Broadway,” says Tom Oppenheim, Artistic Director and President of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. It isn’t enough to be a great dancer or singer – you have to be the best. Once you have the basics down for dance, you need to have versatility to truly stand out. A well-rounded performer that is cast in a Broadway show is a triple threat: singer, actor & dancer.

In my former life, as a Hollywood manager, I had a client, Justin Mortelliti (www.justinmortelliti.com), who studied at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University as well as The London Academy of Theatre in addition to several conservatories & acting coaches throughout NYC and LA. It took a lot of training to get him where he needed to be vocally & physically. There came a point where he would go on so many auditions and come close to booking the job but didn’t. This caused him to reevaluate what he was doing during the audition process to market himself better. He was first cast as Pippin in the NewArt Theatre Company production of “Pippin” and moved on from there to star as Roger in the West Coast Regional Premiere tour of “RENT.” He booked several TV / Film roles throughout the years and finally landed his latest role as the lead role of Drew in the Original Las Vegas cast of “Rock of Ages” where he was a Broadway World nominee for Best Lead Actor in a Musical. It took Justin years and a lot of hard work & determination to get to this level of “working professional actor.”

Working as a professional on-stage is a much different skill set than working in television & film. When you’re working on the set of a TV show or film project, the acting style is to play to one or more camera lens whereas with theatre, you have to reach your audience. Being over the top is generally frowned upon with film acting but on stage, every movement needs to be visible even from 40 rows back. This is why training is so important for actors to be able to change their acting style depending on the type of project they are cast in.

This hard work and determination is what every new actor to the Broadway circle needs to have. You should take voice lessons, acting classes & be in a dance class regularly if you really want to succeed in New York City as a Broadway star. Be open to theatre dance class, ballet & tap. You need to be as versatile as possible. The best, most successful stars never stop training.

“The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts, but is also the return of art to life.” – Oscar Wilde

A Beauty Queen And Barbizon Girl – An Interview With Shaylett Stuckey, Mrs. Michigan America!

 By: Meredith Bahuriak, Barbizon International

Shaylett Stuckey is the reigning Mrs. Michigan America. She is also a graduate of Barbizon of Southfield Michigan in the early 1980’s. Though a few decades have passed since her graduation ceremony, Shaylett reveals she is still a true Barbizon girl!

When did you decide you wanted to train and pursue modeling / acting / pageants?
Well, as far as pageants go, I’d always wanted to compete but didn’t think I had what it would take. I never missed a Miss America televised event and secretly dreamed of wearing a beautiful gown and crown! Honestly, it was my mother who decided that I should model or do something ANYTHING girly, as I was a bit of a tomboy in middle school.

What did your Barbizon training teach you?
I had the most statuesque and beautiful instructor, Octavia Gafford, who showed me what poise and sophistication really looked like. I gained confidence in my appearance and my abilities. I was able to see myself as being successful and walk tall in my skin. I embraced my curves and loved the idea of modeling/acting!

Shaylett Stuckey2

What were you like before Barbizon compared to after Barbizon? What did you gain from your Barbizon experience?
TOMBOY to the TENTH power! After graduation I went on to model in Chicago, Detroit, Ohio, New York and LA! I LOVED IT! The confidence that Barbizon gave me is still with me today. I am still amazed that I remember things I was taught, and that it actually worked!! I was able to pay for college and purchased my first new car with my modeling and acting income.

When did you start competing in pageants? Were you surprised when you were crowned or remember how you felt at that moment?
This really makes pageant veterans angry, but my first pageant EVER was in 2014. I ran for Mrs. Michigan and was 2nd Runner Up. I was only going back in 2015 to support a friend, but decided to try one more time…and I WON!! I was so shocked and surprised that I went into the U.G.L.Y. cry and am none too pleased with my crowning moment photos! I felt humbled and honored. Amazed that a mother of two, who was older than all the other contestants, REALLY WON!! As an African American it was very special as well, since I later found out only one other woman of color had held the title.

You are so involved in your community, working with so many organizations; can you tell us what it’s like to be the reigning Mrs. Michigan America?Image may be NSFW.

Shaylett Stuckey4

Very busy for sure. The beauty of the Mrs. side is that they realize you have family and work obligations, so you do as little or as much as you’d like. I wanted to get out there and show women what was possible and that it’s not over just because you said “I Do”. I’m also a motivational speaker and entrepreneur. I love the work I do in my community and recently my town erected a sign welcoming visitors to the “Home of Mrs. Michigan America”. That was pretty darn cool!

Let’s talk about fashion: how would you describe your style?
I’m edgy, but professional. Flashy and covered. Love a good heel and jeans, cute purse and all the jewelry I can wear without tipping over! As Mrs. Michigan (and a wife/mother) I don’t do super short skirts or really low cut tops. I want my family to be proud of me not embarrassed. I LOVE to watch for new fashions and I’m not afraid to try something. However, I have one rule. Just because it’s made in my size doesn’t mean I have to or need to be wearing it!

Shaylett Stuckey5

Name ONE BEAUTY PRODUCT you cannot live without.
SHEA BUTTER and COCONUT OIL!! I couldn’t do just one. Shea butter is for my skin. Coconut for my hair!

Any beauty secrets?
Get your rest! You may be able to pull all nighters when you’re young but if you don’t get your sleep in, your eyes will tell the story later. I LOVE hearing that I don’t “look” my age! DRINK WATER! DRINK WATER! Oh, and DRINK WATER!

Any fashion and style tips you’re willing to reveal?
I never leave home without earrings. Even if it’s just to drop the kids off at school. Earrings, cute shades or my glasses, and cap. I find cute hats and caps that I can put on quick if my hair is not cooperating or my Glam Squad is off duty! My jewelry line is Premier Designs High Fashion Jewelry and I’ve been a distributor with them for the past 13 years. I LOVE helping women find their accessory personality and allow them to see how a necklace can help take off 10 pounds! I love helping women to look their best. Her fashion sense may not mirror mine but we all have the desire to look and feel good about ourselves. When they find out that 60% of their wardrobe budget should be spent on aImage may be NSFW.

ccessories, they are amazed! I can show them how to mix and match 5 pieces with different jewelry and accessories for a week’s worth of outfits! I minister to them in that way and when they laugh and learn, they book shows and buy jewelry! You can view the entire line at http://shaylett.mypremierdesigns.com.

What advice do have for Barbizon alumni pursuing a career in the modeling and entertainment industry?
Listen to your instructors. Learn your craft. Be the best at what you do. Be true to yourself and keep a network of true friends/family. The industry is tough, but you CAN do it! If something doesn’t feel right for you, it’s OK to say no. There’ll be other opportunities. Your friends and family will be there to help you when it seems like all you’re hearing is no. They will also be your biggest cheerleaders when you FINALLY get the call you’ve been waiting on. Even if you are just doing this to build confidence or gain self-esteem, Barbizon is the REAL DEAL!

A Day in the Life of a Casting Director

 By: David Wooddell, Barbizon USA

Casting directors have a very crucial job in the entertainment industry; they screen all of the talent that agents, managers and sometimes clients themselves submit for consideration on a project. This could be a project for television, film, stage & even new-media (think YouTube). The schedule of a casting director can be critically crazy yet rewarding. “Our job is to try to get inside the imagination and inside the brain of the people we’re casting for,” Mr. Telsey, of Telsey+Company (a casting company in NYC), explains. “You’re sort of like the host of the party. You need to make sure you are serving every kind of meal, or every kind of actor that will make everyone happy. And then you’re going out and finding what it is and what it isn’t that they want.” A casting director will view many possible options for a role, based on what production is looking for and then they will submit their top choices to the network (for television), the director (for film) and the ad agency (for commercial). See what our casting director friends and longtime supporters of Barbizon shared about a day in their life.

Interview with Donna McKenna, CSA

Donna McKenna (1)
How do you start your day?
“I start my day walking my puppy and saying my prayers then I have my coffee. As far as work, every day is different depending on my schedule and what project I am working on but it usually will start with answering emails, prepping breakdowns and auditions or reading a script even if I’m on an early train to the city. “

What are some challenges you face during your day-to-day work and how do you overcome them?
“Some of the challenges I face during my day-to-day work is probably one everyone faces: there are not enough hours in the day. Other challenges I face are after a detailed casting character breakdown is released the director and writer change their mind regarding the character description they originally had me place. I am used to this situation so much I now release 3 different character description breakdowns. It is more work for me in the beginning but in the long run it’s the best situation. Another challenge is when I’m auditioning, there is never enough time to see all the actors I want in a day. I overcome this by only taking a 20 minute lunch and having many actors self tape their auditions for me.

What was your favorite project to work on?
“This is one of the hardest questions I am always asked and I honestly say every project is my favorite or special, each project brings new people, new adventures, learning experiences and new memories to my life. Each project brings me a new #filmfamily.”

Any advice for someone wanting to start out in casting?
“The advice I would give is:

1- Be kind to every aspiring actor even if they don’t have talent.
2- Choose your words and critique very carefully. what we say or do to and for someone can change their life forever.
3- Take care of your talent and their representatives
4- Research actors, see actors in shows and showcases.
5- Make all your audition rooms fun, entertaining and rewarding for the actor, if you are not reading with the actor during auditions make sure you have a strong, talented, giving reader.
6- And most importantly always be creative and have FUN!”

Interview with Caroline Liem, CSA

Caroline LIem

How do you start your day?
“Coffee. Trades. Video.”

What is a “day in the life of Caroline” like?
“We have established my start – coffee, trades & video. I try to spend a period of time to view a showcase. I try to go to as many as I can. Let’s say last week, I spent 30 minutes at a 2-hour showcase. I could only spend 30 minutes there but I definitely wanted to go because I love to see how the work of a particular studio or school is and also to find some great talent. While I was at the showcase, my assistant was getting my casting session ready down the street. That day I read actors for 4-5 hours. After that, I reviewed tape and forwarded my choices to the directors and then had dinner. Once dinner was done, I had a phone conference with directors and reviewed their choices from my selections. Once I finished with that, I gave our final choices for callbacks to agents & then headed to bed. That was my day for about 3 days.”

What was your favorite project to work on?
“It’s very challenging to say. One of my favorite experiences was working on X-Men 2. I loved it because I had been working in casting for a while but this was my first time with international casting. Because of that, I don’t just cast in LA or LA/NYC; I now cast in LA, NYC, Canada, Germany, Russia, Italy, etc… It’s great to be able to work with casting around the world and to be able to field videos from actors who are international all while working regular casting sessions in LA. This was my first time to reach beyond my immediate village and to work on such a high scale project while still bringing in some really great choices.”

Do you ever get star struck?
“The truth? Not really star struck. I was in awe of meeting One Direction. When I met them, they were lovely, polite boys. They couldn’t have been nicer! Instead of being star struck because I’m around talent…musicians…dancers, I’m more in awe of the person who is humble, knows who they are & is a regular human being. It isn’t about being a Kardashian or the “public shock value” but it’s about the star being really humble…a regular person.”

You might have noticed…

Our featured casting directors mentioned “breakdowns.”

I previously touched on what a breakdown is here. I have included some samples on an upcoming Pilot below.

Let’s focus on the role of “Gator.” As you can tell, casting is seeking 12 year old girls (can be older to play younger) that will be a series regular. All ethnicities can be submitted.

Some key words to focus on while submitting: “scheming but likeable,” “practical,” “finds a way to win.”
